CUISINE Japanese Steakhouse | Fusion | Halal
SEATING CAPACITY 98 (Private rooms for functions available)

Being born and bred in a small town, I naturally prefer to dine in homey settings. Thus I was a little hesitant at first when I headed to Angus House for lunch, a fine dining Japanese steakhouse tucked away on the highest floor in Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur. But what greeted me was not an ostentatious display, but an inviting place that lets quality speaks for itself. Softly lit and furnished in a clean-cut style, it gives off a minimal yet elegant air, and with sultry piano music playing in the background, it felt like I was stepping away from the city and into a calm, tranquil place. After being introduced to the manager, Julian, I took a seat with my colleagues and let the restaurant’s accommodating staff take us through a very pleasant dining experience over the course of an intimate afternoon.
Living up to its name, Angus House boasts of their selection of steaks which are mostly imported from Australia, with the exception of their Wagyu and Kobe. Their specialty lies in preparation: the steaks are charcoal grilled, which sears in flavor and retains the meat’s tenderness, and using Japanese ingredients in their sauces give an eastern twist to otherwise very western fare. In fact, most of their culinary has that kind of approach: there will be one or two key ingredients in an unassuming dish to remind your palate of the land of the rising sun. Apart from steaks, they also offer seafood, pasta and poultry, and of course a meal of this cuisine is not complete without wine to finish: their wine cabinet, which will be the first thing that catches your eye as you enter, carries a fine selection of reds and whites from countries as far as Chile and New Zealand.

Chocolate is derived from the Theobroma Cacao tree. Theobroma is Latin for “Food of the Gods”. It is no wonder that chocolate is so revered since it has long been found to contain powerful restorative and healing properties, besides being absolutely delicious. Being a lover of all things chocolate myself, I was delighted for the opportunity to sample the wickedly indulgent spread offered by the aptly named Theobroma Chocolate Lounge, in 1 Utama shopping complex.
The chocolate lounge features an open concept, overlooking the hustle and bustle of shoppers on the ground floor. It offers an ambience that is cozy and laid-back, where patrons can sit back in comfy leather chairs and have a nice chat, or simply enjoy a good read. “Theobroma is a great place for people to lounge, catch up with friends and basically, just to chill out,” shares Gail Ong, the Advertising and Promotion Manager of The Hing Yiap Group, the company that owns the restaurant.

Have you ever thought about getting up close and personal with your favourite movie star? Do you wish you could sit down for a meal, right next your idol? Apparently, that might just happen if you are dining in at the DainTi hill Restaurant in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.
The restaurant, which originated from Taiwan, is said to be a popular eating place among celebrities. In fact, according to Joshua Liew, managing director of the outlet, I had just missed Jackie Chan, who
had dropped in to have lunch a couple of days ago after promoting his new movie, The Shinjuku Incident, at the shopping centre.
Joshua shares that the restaurant serves fusion food – Chinese cuisine influenced by the Tang Dynasty, but presented in a Western and modern style. Similarly, the whole concept of DainTi hill, from the lavish interior design of the outlet to the artwork on their menu and coasters, were inspired by elements of Chinese culture from the Tang Dynasty and by the then emperor’s most beloved Concubine, Yang Kwei Fei.

In 2007, To Dine For was awarded the Best Halal Asian Restaurant in Kuala Lumpur for the year 2007/08 for its efficient services, strategic location, value for money and for keeping the halal guidelines. To Dine For is also one of the top ten recommended restaurants in Kuala Lumpur for tourists and business travellers. Belonging to the Sea Cuisine group of restaurants specialising in Thai cuisine; To Dine For offers patrons a range of Thai cuisine from various parts of Thailand.
Located at the city centre, To Dine For promises to offer not only a satisfying lunch treat to its corporate crowd, but a place suitable for company lunches and business meetings. It is quiet and offers its patrons enough privacy. The restaurant is filled often with well-made up girls in power suits and men dressed for success. Lipstick marks on the straws that were stuck in glasses of Thai coffee and teas were quite a common sight to the waiters and waitresses.

CUISINE Fusion | Pork-Free

The air conditioned cafe in the corner offered salvation from the scorching afternoon sun. Seated on a table where the view of the barista was clear I observed as he took out a queer looking glass apparatus. He placed some water into a circular glass bowl and lit a wick which he then placed beneath the bowl. Coffee beans were placed into a coffee grinder and once the beans were ground he placed them into a glass extension that protrudes from the mouth of the circular glass bowl. The water in the bowl began to boil and as the water bubbles a sucking motion began sucking the water up into the glass extension. The water made contact and mixed with the ground coffee beans, and as the barista skilfully stirred the mixture a dark liquid formed. After a minute he extinguished the fire on the wick. The mixture began to cool down and the black liquid flowed back into the circular bowl while the ground coffee beans were left behind. The very contented barista carefully emptied the liquid into a coffee cup and the waiter carried it off to be served to its eager drinker; me.

“The name “Melting Pot” connotes variety” explains our host and indeed one would readily agree that it would aptly apply where we are sitting. The Melting Pot Café is Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur’s signature restaurant which has a seating capacity for 216 and briefly comprises an intimate dining area and bar lounge. There are also open “action stations” for those who enjoy watching their food being prepared.
The fact that it was a slightly rainy day in Kuala Lumpur meant that the crowd was rather subtle and one could unwind comfortably watching the rest of the world go by. Located slightly off the façade of the hotel, Melting Pot overlooks the hive of activity that is Jalan Sultan Ismail a walk away from the best of KL club scene.
But it isn’t that view that brought us here tonight. Rather, it is the two guest chefs specially flown over from Pattaya, Thailand. Chefs Boonsom Wongchareon and Nopparat Pianpisai are here to entice diners with an array of Thai cuisine from their years of experience in the industry.
