Luwak If You Dare..

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

Some people think that the infamous Kopi Luwak coffee is a myth, or perhaps an urban legend. Well, it is the real deal, folks. The Kopi Luwak comes from the Indonesian island of Sumatra, an area well-known for its excellent coffee beans. These coffee beans have been eaten by and then passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet or scientifically known as Paradoxus hermaphrodites.

While the bean is in the little mammal’s stomach, it undergoes chemical treatments and fermentations; which result in its rich, heavy flavour with hints of caramel or chocolate undertone. Other terms used to describe it are earthy, musty and exotic. The body is almost syrupy and it’s very smooth. The Luwak Coffee is indisputably the world’s rarest and most exclusive coffee, and of course, the price – outrageous. If you are able to find a vendor… the current market price per kilogram is USD 1,000.

Whisper “Iron Chef Party” and the layman will immediately conjure images of world class chefs frantically yet somehow in full control moving around a kitchen arena, stirring up culinary masterpieces in a less than an hour. Cue a toad-in-the-well moment as one realizes that the Iron Chef (IC) Party is nothing like that in TV Land. Before you plead ignorance, an IC party is essentially a ‘potluck’, with a main ingredient announced 24 hours before the party, accompanied by prizes for best dishes. For party hosts who have grown weary of the usual curry chicken / potato salad party or tired of flipping through catering menus of dubious standards, this is the party for you!

Web lore has it that The Iron Chef Dinner Party was originated by David J. Cavuto, an avid Iron Chef fan who was blown away by the response to his first IC Party. The “Cranberry Battle” evoked entries that ranged from the exotic squash soups with cran crème fraiche and cranlava to the eyebrow-raising cranberry salmon croquette and cranberry curry, ubiquitous cranberry sangria and giggle-inducing cranberry nut tatties. Expect to be similarly blown away by your guests’ creative culinary skills or potential as cafeteria ladies (mystery goop dish experts).

Over the years, this idea has gained great popularity with Americans; some have even attempted to respect tradition and execute IC competitions at home. The IC Party even has its own spinoff in Australia – the Champion Chef Game Pack, complete with game cards with secret ingredients, costumes, tear-as-you-use invitation, score sheet and instruction pads. Here’s an introductory timeline to help you along. Please note that this list is by no means exhaustive, and if you want extra frills to placate the workaholic in you, kindly add them in.

India is responsible for 65% of the world’s mango crop.

While ambrosia was known in ancient literature as the food of the gods, in India, it is the mango that is considered the heavenly diet of deities. And little wonder, since 70% of India’s fruit industry grows mangos, which produce 65% of the world’s consumption.

Mango is the national fruit of India because of its ready availability, and the huge trees which yield a steady and large crop. Reaching heights of 120ft. or more, the mango tree sports an evergreen leaf that starts out orange/pink, then ripens to a shining red, and finally to a rich green, in a reverse of the ripening process of fruits like the papaya.

Hell’s Kitchen
UK Heats Up Red Hot Wednesdays on the Asian Food Channel

Renowned British Chef and restaurateur, Marco Pierre White, spices up Asian Food Channel’s Red Hot Wednesday by appearing in Hell’s Kitchen for the first time in Asia. As the hellish head chef and critic, Chef White puts 10 British celebrities through their paces in preparing the ultimate celebrity dinner. The exclusive Asian television premiere of the latest 13-part reality competition series, Hell’s Kitchen UK, airs on AFC starting Wednesday, 6 May at 10 p.m.

Chef White’s exacting standards push the skills of 10 British celebrities to their limits, including Lee Ryan,
former member of the boy band, Blue. The highly spirited group is divided into teams by gender, with the teams

going head-to-head preparing mouth-watering meals for a discerning clientele. Each episode is brimming with cooking disasters, flare-ups, and eliminations all peppered with Chef White’s red-hot comments throughout.

The outspoken chef says that his presenting style on Hell’s Kitchen UK is very different from his former
disciple, Gordon Ramsay’s. He focuses on inspiring celebrity participants and teaching them how to
cook without humiliating them.

Yet, Chef White’s notoriously fiery temper has often put him in hot water. For instance, he is famous for
Hell’s Kitchen UK Heats Up Red Hot Wednesdays on the A sian Food Channel reducing Gordon Ramsay to tears during Ramsay’s early apprenticeship at one of his restaurants and very well may have been the inspiration to Ramsay’s persona on the US version of Hell’s Kitchen.
