CUISINE Malaysian – Chinese | Non-halal

I highly recommend Oriental Cravings. Not only do they serve main dishes, they also serve ala carte meals such as Curry Laksa, Fried Rice and Red-wine Chicken Rice Noodles. It would be the perfect pick for one craving a chinese meal but did not fancy going to a chinese restaurant.

Being a seasoned customer, I often know what to order as soon as I am seated. I often ordered Honey Glazed Chicken Wings to start, careless of whether or not I am able to finish. Its taste lingers on and I crave for it whenever I am there. They are slightly sweet and crunchy and very tempting although some may find it cumbersome and messy to eat.

I always opt for the Claypot Lou Shu Fun. It is cooked with mince pork and pork lard, which makes it very appetising. The gravy is flavourful and not too starchy, and the pork lard gives it its crisp and full flavour. In my opinion, claypot lou shu fun is hardly complete without pork lard.

Instead of ordering Chinese Tea I often have Iced Calamansi with Sour Plum or “Kat Chai Shuen Mui” in Cantonese. Now whenever I crave Chinese, I come to One Utama. The shop is located at ground floor, new wing of 1 Utama (same row with HSBC Amanah).

The place was brightly lit, exuding a clean and yet rustic charm, reminiscent of the traditional Chinese restaurants of yesteryears. Supposedly a maestro of everything porky, Oriental Cravings has her own following. It is usually crowded during dinner hours. All this while I’ve flicked off this particular outlet, thinking that it was another mediocre Kopitiam without noticing that it served mostly Chinese cuisine. From the menu for individual servings, the options were tempting. One could pick from Bah Kut Teh (RM15.90) to Sweet & Sour Pork on Rice (RM12.90), and various noodles.

The curry laksa was brimming with roast pork, pork meatballs, tofu puffs, long beans and brinjal and served with lots of coconut milk. I did not notice the type of noodles that was served in the laksa but if the gravy had been less oily, the bowl of laksa would have scored a higher rating in my books. I started picking on the ingredients after a few spoonfuls of curry for it was a little too much, at one sitting. Although, still lip-smacking heaven.

I picked the 8 Treasure Fried Rice, the 8 treasures being: Chinese sausage, roast pork, BBQ pork, prawn, Chinese mushroom, peas, carrot, corn, and omelette. I was disappointed when it was served for I was expecting a larger serving with more of the mentioned ingredients. The 8 treasures were extra-finely chopped ingredients and sprinkled with two to three measly shrimps although the rice was well-cooked with a fluffy texture.
