<font size=3">Porky Affair at Dave’s

The air-cond in my office is running in full swing and before noon, I was already feeling the hunger pangs. So it was just as well that at 11.30am, LL called to say that his class ended early and that he was coming over to 1U for lunch. At my suggestion of having something porky, LL’s eyes sparkled up… and that’s how we ended up heading for Dave’s.

I have passed by this place many times but have never gone in to try their food. Just this morning I was reading some reviews of this place and I thought, with LL as lunch companion, this would be a good place to try.

My first impression of the place was that it’s too dim. Good for lovers out on a date… hmmm… I’d prefer to be able to see my
food clearly while dining in a restaurant! Better lighting helps with the photography too, if you know what I mean.

Flipping through their somewhat tattered menu (some of the pages were falling off! or maybe I was just unlucky to get one in that state!)… recalling what one fehmes blogger raved about their Pork Belly Shavings (RM18), we decided to have that as a starter.

The “pork belly shavings” were nothing more than thin strips of bacon, fried till crispy and topped with a forgettable & undiscernible brown gravy. The portion served was quite miserly too. So… I would say this was rather disappointing, contrary
to what that fehmes blogger reviewed. I ordered a regular-sized Aussie Pizza (RM31) to share with LL. Now this was definitely much better than the disappointing starter. The thin-crusted pizza was topped with generous helpings of ham, bacon, anchovies, olives, onions, fresh basil and oozing with melted mozarella cheese! I would say the “regular size” was also generous – more than enough for 2 people.

Oh by the way, they charge RM1 for a glass of plain water. All in all, lunch for 2 persons today cost me RM117. Hey LL, can’t do this too often, you know… otherwise I’ll go pokkai soon, man!

The menu said it’s served with Scrambled Eggs. However, as you can see in the pic, that was definitely not scrambled eggs – the yolk and white were clearly not mixed, as what good scrambled eggs should be. It was
just fried eggs, ok.

This is the end-result of the Pork Knuckle…

After that yummy pizza, I hardly had any more stomach space for LL’s ultimate lunch – the Pork Knuckle (RM51)! It was not an overly big piece of knuckle (for that price) but the side dishes of mashed potato, salad and pickles were pretty complete.

I liked the purple cabbage salad – it had bits of fried bacon sprinkled on top. The skin was super crispy and the meat was well marinated. I took a few nibbles of the meat and my only complaint was that the gravy served with it was really not up to par. I think Dave’s has a problem with making sauces/gravies – they’re
nondescript and tasteless. I can do much better gravies!

Yyess, pasta – lovely pasta to get hungry with. This time, we headed to Suria KLCC for some photo shooting & shopping. I always love this tall, majestic building for some reason. I love watching the different kind of people from all walks of life just hanging out here. After a brisk walk at the park, we were thinking of what to eat…

And so for lunch, we decided to choose California Pizza Kitchen – located on the 1st level of Suria.

This dish is available with prawns, or chicken and sauteed mushroom. We went for chicken. The creamy sauce is also very garlic-ky, and tastes nice with the rich parmesan in it. This babe was priced at RM24.90 and we also ordered to add in sauteed mushrooms.

Looks good… I loved the very delicious Portobello Mushroom Ravioli I had. They look so flowery. And one bite in the Rosemary ravioli brings a burst of Portobello mushrooms, herbs and melting cheese… and it is simply delicious… This dish was served in a fresh Italian tomato sauce with garlic and Parmesan cream. Very rich in garlic. Very. Vampires would refrain from going anywhere near you. Period. The price? RM 28.90 and for an additional RM3.00 or so, you get additional sauteed mushrooms.

The restaurant has 3 sections – front where cute round tables with sofas are situated, the main dining with wooden tables and seats, and the outdoor balcony overlooking the water park of KLCC. I would love to seat outside, but probably not on a hot KL afternoon…

Menu is pretty ok for me, from appetizers to salads, pizzas and pastas, soups and sandwiches, desserts and a whole lot of beverage for kids and adults. One of what I like, of its service, is that, if you have kids with you, the waiters bring you drawing papers and colourful crayons so kids don’t get bored. A good one there.

I wish I had more people dining with me – to order more food and take more food picture!! But maybe next time… I’m more of a “couple foodie” than a group of foodies… but I enjoy doing what I do even if it’s small! For my guy, it is usually fettuccine. Cos he likes kuey teow(flat rice noodles), and fettuccine is the Italian version of kuey teow. And he loves cream sauce.

One Fettuccine with Garlic Cream sauce which look deliciously creamy… By the time we almost finish our lunch, we were very full. I remember the last time we were here, we ordered the Baja Chicken Tortilla Spring Rolls. Delicioussss and very filling. We did not get to dessert… no way can we stuff ourselves any further, and food is never good to waste.

Previously, I tried the Panna Cota and Tiramisu, which were both very lovely. Don’t think they have the Panna Cota anymore…

Let’s give it a 8/10..
Good food, nice place, they love kids, and staffs are good.

Mezza Notte is also italian for “midnight”. but it was only slightly past seven pm when we found ourselves stepping into this modern italian restaurant, hoping to be fed well. the decor is a bit garish in my opinion, esp. with the scary purple walls. but somehow it works well with the lighting and comes off looking rather cosy in photos. as it was still early and relatively empty, we were seated at one of the booth seats in the corner which gave us substantial privacy.

we were served a complimentary bread platter and some vegetable sticks with a dip. i’m quite pleased with the selection of bread given and esp. enjoyed the breadstick and the cheesy cracker. the smashed olive dip was a big hit with us and we asked for seconds. ah, gluttons we are. following that, we were asked the dreaded question of still/sparkling water, to which we mumbled back “still”, in hopes it was plain h2o instead of “branded liquid” (i.e. evian or perrier). haha, as if. and it’s RM13 for every 50cl of evian.

We started with the “Clam & Mussel Casserole”, which was prepared with cherry tomatoes and fresh herbs. It was glistening with the sauce and looked so inviting. Tasted excellent too. At RM26 per serving.

Soup of the day was “Lobster Bisque” (RM16). A rather simple soup with few key ingredients where freshness is the key. This tasted velvety and rich and was oozing with the fresh taste of the lobster. Very hearty and promising start.

I chose the Baked Lamb Shank (RM42.00) because it had all my favourite sides – mashed potatoes (with pesto), fried onion rings and sauteed wild mushrooms (yum!). The mashed potatoes were sublime and I am very tempted to attempt making my own pesto mash. Think i am starting to fall in love with basil leaves. They add so much flavour to food. The onion rings were fried to a crisp but had no bitter aftertaste. I enjoyed this immensely.

My friend’s husband ordered the “Amanti Del Carne” Pizza (RM32.00), which is quite the meat lover’s pizza with beef pepperoni, chicken shreds, bolognese sauce, and mushrooms.

My friend ordered lamb too and she chose the Lamb Rack (RM78.00) which was served with thick potato slices, artichokes etc. I can’t remember what sauce was used, but thought mine tasted better.

Overall, service is commendable, and the waiters knowledgeable. Quite an extensive menu in my opinion. Japanese food is also available here so if Italian is not your thing, there’s an option here.

I want to do this post quick. Today is my colleague Cindy’s birthday, 5 of us go to Izzi Pizza for a good lunch. The restaurant is located at the junction of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail, it’s easy to spot it when you take KL Monorail. Izzi Pizza is a chain store from Indonesia, this is the first store they venture to Malaysia F&B industry. There is an interview with Izzi Pizza in the Nov~Dec 06 flavours magazine, they also talk about their plan to open few more branch in Malaysia in near future.

“Marinara Pizza – Shrimps, mussels, garlic, chilli, mozarella cheese and tomato, the waitress suggested to add extra cheese but we don’t, otherwise the girls will feel even more guilty after the meal.”
